IITJEE-2008 : Analysis of Rank Vs Score
Email This Post
In the previous post (click here to see), I gave you marks and rank data to give you an idea about the marks scored by rank holders in JEE-08. That data was collected from students studying in various IITs.
In the post, I am posting an interesting observation about marks (score) and rank at JEE-08. The data for this analysis has been taken from IITJEE website.
Look at the following graph which shows ranks on the horizontal line (x-axis) and the marks scored in IITJEE-08 on the vertical line (y-axis).
* Graph above is provided by Yogesh Garg, a student appearing for IITJEE 2009 exam.
You can observe that the rate at which marks needed to score ranks fall steep till first 2500 ranks but later rate change in constant. After 3000 rank, on an average there are 500 ranks within a gap of 5-6 marks . It means for higher ranks , on an average there are 100 students per mark. So if you loose marks in two 3 marks questions, you rank will drop by 600. This indicates that 40% questions in the paper are of easy to average level difficulty as there are lots of students who can solve these questions in exam.
At lower rank , say in top 1000, there are on average 4 students per mark (1000 ranks in 270 marks). This indicates that to score rank in top 1000, you need to solve at least some above average level questions.
Data on the basis of which above graph is drawn is shown below.
