Guidelines for IITJEE

Email This Post Email This Post

IIT JEE is one of the toughest competitive examinations in India, for admission to undergraduate programs in Engineering in IITs. Being the most sought after & toughest, preparation for IITJEE calls for a very disciplined and organized methodology with proper guidance from the experts to follow. A few tips to excel in IITJEE are mentioned below:

IITJEE Simplified: Study Tip 1 – How much should I study?

Every day I answer student’s queries related to how they should prepare for IITJEE; how much to study; what to study; when to study and so on.

I have been answering these questions since last 13 years when I started teaching Mathematics for IITJEE.

So I decided to start a series of study tips “IITJEE Simplified” where I will write about the best approaches to follow while preparing for IITJEE exam. In this series, I will also answer most common questions that an IITJEE aspirant can come across.

Here is today’s tip:

How many hours should I study at home?

Some of you out there must be toppers of your class or among the top 10% of your class. But that is just a performance in your class or best at a school level. It means till now you have been competing among a small student base of 50 – 1000 students. To read the complete article, click here

IITJEE Simplified: Study Tip 2 – Things I should avoid?

Things you should start avoiding immediately

Remember that for next 2 years you have to give your best to get admission in a good college. So to take out 55 hours every week, you need to sacrifice some of your time sucking activities.

If you are involved in any of the following activities mentioned below, I suggest you should stop it immediately:

Avoid too much socializing: Avoid too much talking on phone with your friends. Not more than 15-30 minutes every day. Keep yourself away from family discussions. Don’t get into arguments with parents and brothers/sisters. It just wastes your time and energy. Be selfish to focus on your career. Say NO or avoid social functions and visits at relatives.

Avoid long hours on TV, Internet and games: TV serials, movies, matches are real time and energy suckers. If you are too much into TV, cut down immediately. Don’t spend more than 1 hour in front of TV every day.

Internet is the biggest addiction of all time. Real time sucker. Don’t sit on computer for more than 1 hour unless you have to appear for 100percentile tests. To save your time you need to choose TV or Internet browsing or video games. Don’t spend more than 1 hour average daily on any of these activities.

Avoid outdoor sports: Those who are playing physical games a lot should reduce them or should stop them. These games are very tiring. If you are physically tired, you would not be able to concentrate on studies. So for physical activities, I suggest evening walk or light exercise either in the morning or evening. IITJEE Simplified: Tip 3 – What is the best way to study Mathematics?

Once open a time a lady wanted to hire a cook for her restaurant. She interviewed many candidates and finally she selected the one who impressed her in the interview. Lady was very impressed with his knowledge of cooking. He was like a cooking encyclopedia.

On his first day of the job, lady thought of taking his trial. She asked him to cook “Kadai Chicken“. She started eagerly waiting for the food. Food was served and she had her first bite. It was pathetic in taste. She could not swallow even a single bite of it. The lady was shocked and asked the man “It is so horrible in taste. Are you sure you can cook food?” He replied, “Madam, sorry for the food. Actually I have never done cooking before. I just had taken lessons on cooking from experts and during my training classes, I saw the instructor cooking. Also, I have read and learned all the recipes of making excellent food.”

Moral of the story is, there is a difference in knowing how to do things and actually being able to do things. By merely just knowing how to do things does not make you expert on actually doing it yourself.

Learning Mathematics is like learning the art of solving problems (actually doing) and not just knowing formulae and concepts (acquiring knowledge). So if you want to improve your mathematics, you need to focus more and more on problem solving instead of just reading theories, formulae, and solutions.

Find some more instructions/tips that would definitely help you learn mathematics better. To read the complete article, click here

IITJEE Simplified: Study Tip 4 – How to practice problems?

IITJEE is an exam that is totally based on problem solving. Whether it is physics or chemistry or mathematics, hardly any theoretical questions are asked. Mostly it is numerical based questions. Because of this nature of IITJEE, students preparing for IITJEE exam should spend most of their time in solving more and more problems.

There are many students who are spending lot of time on problem solving but even though they are not able to score in exam. This is because they don’t remember ideas/tricks of many questions in exam which they should have solved. This happens because while doing problem solving, they learn things but they do nothing to retain them in their memory i.e. they solve problems but don’t revise them. To repeat, they need to retain. To retain, they should learn/memorize the ideas/tricks of the questions, To learn/memorize, they need to put efforts and time as well as they should follow the correct approach.

To retain and repeat, I recommend a “Four Phases Approach (FPA)” to you for doing problem solving. This is little difficult to follow as it requires  you to be little systematic in your studies which most students found difficult to be. But once “Four Phases Approach” followed properly, it will definitely help you in many dimensions like improving your speed, accuracy, problem solving ability and confidence in the topic.

There are 4 phases of the approach. To read the complete article, click here
